Former Bachelorette star Gabby Windey didn’t hold back on her Long Winded podcast, revealing that she had her first wild experience with alcohol way back when she was just a teen.

“I started drinking at 13,” Windey, 34, admitted on the Thursday, March 13 episode. “I was throwing up out of my nose. … It’s the Midwest or something.”

She went on to say that, at the time, she thought everyone was drinking like that. “I don’t know what went wrong; I assume everyone was like that, but I guess not.”

Gabby on Drinking and Feeling “Uninhibited”

Growing up in Illinois before moving to California, Windey said alcohol made her feel a little looser in social situations.

“If we’re going to go out for a drink and have fun, I’m afraid that other people are already thinking that I can’t have fun, so then I think about it like that,” she shared. “I take everything on, internalize it, personalize it, project it [and] whatever the f— you want to call it.”

She admitted that she’s been rethinking her relationship with alcohol lately, especially after getting over bronchitis in February.

“Normally I’ll go out and at least have, like, one or two drinks but I didn’t because I knew I had to get better for this [podcast],” she said. “I was like, ‘Why am I so happy? Why am I grateful for my life for once? What has been the big change?’ It’s not like I’ve been binge-drinking every night, it’s not. It’s just the depressant lasts a while for me because there’s already some f—ed-up s— in there. I don’t have enough dopamine.”

Learning to Have Fun While Sober

Lately, Windey has been trying to enjoy herself without drinking, but she admits it’s still a work in progress.

“I get real judgy as f— if everybody else is drinking around me,” she joked. “Then, I’m gonna sit back and be, like, [looking at them with my arms crossed]. Actually, I like being around drunk people ‘cause I know they’re not going to remember anything so I can think and say whatever I want and it doesn’t matter. I just need to channel that more.”

One big influence on her mindset? Her wife, comedian Robby Hoffman. (The two secretly eloped in January and just recently made it public.)

“Robby’s like, ‘You’re just not meant to be drinking,’” Windey said. “I’m like, ‘Totally.’ While I’m drinking it’s fine because I get loose as a goose and I say things … that get around [to other people afterward].”

For now, it seems like she’s leaning into the sober life—but she’s still figuring it all out.
