Lamine Yamal had everyone talking after Barcelona’s 3-1 win over Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Commentators went crazy over what they called a “ridiculous assist” for Raphinha’s opener—but turns out, it wasn’t even intentional.

The 17-year-old dribbled past the Benfica defense in the 11th minute, setting up Raphinha for a close-range volley that put Barça in control of the match. The Spanish side cruised through with a 4-1 aggregate win in the round of 16.

While pundits were hyping up Yamal’s incredible footwork and balance, he was quick to set the record straight.

“I have to thank Raphinha because I tried to shoot and the pass came out to him,” Yamal admitted to Movistar Plus.

Even though that assist was a happy accident, his actual goal was pure class. Just before the half-hour mark, Yamal cut in from the right wing and curled a left-footed rocket into the top corner from outside the box.

He later compared it to his first goal for Spain, when he scored a stunning left-footed shot in their 2-1 win over France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.

“I always try that shot and today it came out,” Yamal said.

Looks like whether he’s shooting or assisting (accidentally or not), Yamal just keeps delivering.
